North Bay & District Multicultural Centre

The North Bay & District Multicultural Centre is leading a number of multi-stakeholder initiatives to enhance the city’s economy by attracting, recruiting and retaining skilled immigrants.

North Bay is one of the most economically diverse communities in Northern Ontario. A large percentage of employment is in health care, education, government and military. North Bay is home to Nipissing University and Canadore College. The service, transportation, and tourism industries are also significant contributors to the community’s economy.

The North Bay Employers’ Council is led by local employers who identify and steer programs aimed to resolve regional labour market needs. In the city labour force realities include a high number of retirements, an aging population with low birth rates, and a reliance on newcomers to meet human resources needs.  The Connector Program helps integrate newcomers into the community by creating professional and social networks for internationally trained professionals, business immigrants, newcomers and their spouses. Professions North helps skilled immigrants obtain accreditation in fields including accounting and finance. North Bay is also following in the footsteps of other cities across Canada and is developing a mentoring program for skilled immigrants.
